Marcellus Shale Gas in Pennsylvania
Gas from the Marcellus Shale has attracted great attention across the nation. We are privileged to have the Pennsylvania State Geologist, George E. W. Love, P.G., speak to us about this timely subject.
Many people believe that gas from shales is a new phenomenon. In fact, the first gas well in North America was a shale gas well, initially completed 38 years before “Colonel” Edwin L. Drake drilled his famous oil well in Titusville, Pennsylvania in 1859. Within the last two decades, shale gas has become a significant production source within the US. In Pennsylvania, the Marcellus Shale has captured the attention of the gas drilling industry, the state government, the environmental community, and the average PA taxpayer. This talk will describe the geology of the Marcellus, briefly touch on the history of its development, and share the known facts about current issues of concern.
George Love got his B.S. in geology at Pennsylvania State University in 1968 and his M.S. in geology at Franklin and Marshall College in 1970. He has a number of years of experience managing large mining operations with the Dravo Lime Co. and Mobil Mining & Minerals Co., primarily related to phosphate rock surface mining and processing, and associated environmental concerns. He is currently the Bureau Director of the Pennsylvania Geological Survey.
